Harrisburg leaders to hold public meetings for "last chance" deal

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Harrisburg) -- City Council and Mayor Linda Thompson have 20 days to agree on - and submit - a fiscal recovery plan to stave off a state takeover of the city's finances. Under a law signed last week, public meetings must be held with stakeholders to talk about a so-called "Consent Agreement." Council member Patty Kim says it's great to have a last chance opportunity, but she doesn't know if attitudes that have caused months of gridlock will change. "The stakes are higher now because we don't like our options. I don't think there's a lot of people or parties who are going to budge toward the middle. I think people are still upset with each other. We just have to force ourselves to talk and try to get something done," Kim says. Kim says meetings are tentatively scheduled for Thursday and November third. She has voted for financial recovery plans proposed by a state-appointed adviser and Mayor Linda Thompson. Both of those plans were rejected by a four-member majority on council that has instead approved a controversial bankruptcy filing for the city.
