Group recommends partnership, improvements to Carlisle Airport

Written by  Craig Layne and Megan Lello

(Carlisle) -- The future of air travel in one central Pennsylvania community could soon be under some closer supervision. A business advisory board could be created to keep an open line of communication between the private investment group that owns the facility and regional interests, like businesses, that could benefit from continued and expanded air service at the strip. Omar Shute of the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation says the small airport in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, would be able make improvements through a private-public partnership. "Opportunities that may be available today may not be available tomorrow, and tomorrow there may be better opportunities to generate more investment and help the airport get the necessary improvements," Shute says. Shute is a member of a taskforce including community volunteers and county leaders that took two years to study the airport's strengths and weaknesses. The group recommended the creation of panel -- along with other improvements like a wider runway and better access to ground transportation and lodging. It also concluded it was in the interest of businesses and the people living in the Carlisle region to "preserve, protect and promote" the airport.
