Coalition of hunger assistance organizations finds new name

Written by  Stephanie Reighart and Radio Pennsylvania

(McMurray, PA) -- A network of hunger relief organizations in Pennsylvania has changed its name. The Pennsylvania Association of Regional Food Banks, which is made up of 21 members in all 67 counties, is now known as Hunger-Free Pennsylvania. Executive Director Sheila Christopher says the new name better fits its growing membership and overall goal. "We wanted to be more inclusive of other organizations and kind of make more of a statement on this issue that we're having in our commonwealth of low food security and hunger," she says. Christopher says the need for food assistance in the state has almost doubled since 2007. A survey by the Food Research and Action Center finds that more than two million Pennsylvanians do not have the money to buy enough food for themselves or their families. Hunger-Free Pennsylvania is made up of a network of food banks, food pantries, homeless shelters, and other organizations.
