Governor Corbett says PA's natural gas infrastructure needs a boost

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- Governor Corbett’s Marcellus Shale plan rollout includes incentives for natural gas drilling companies that help build up the state’s natural gas infrastructure. It’s the old chicken and egg dilemma. Which comes first, the natural gas stations or the high demand for natural gas? Governor Corbett is hoping lots of stations will lead to high demand. His top adviser on energy, Patrick Henderson, says work is beginning on an incentive program for drilling companies that invest in natural gas refueling stations as well as public transit systems that run on natural gas. "Certainly where one of the large appetites for natural gas is, we certainly hope, which is mass transit, and the refueling stations -- you know -- the chicken and the egg characterization that was used," he says. "This is an opportunity to help grow that market in those local communities." The governor is proposing to set up so-called green corridors, where there are naturaL gas refueling stations every 50 miles. He also says he wants to see the refueling stations built within two miles of major highways.
