Governor Corbett looks to privatize more than just liquor sales

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Hershey) -- Governor Corbett says his commission looking into the pros and cons of privatizing some state services could focus on state parks. Corbett says he’ll announce another panel to examine privatization and innovation opportunities in the state. Exactly what that commission will study is still unclear. But, the governor is throwing out ideas. He says he can conceive of the privatization commission taking a closer look at health care provided in prisons and at how the state runs its parks. "You know there are some places where we don’t have lifeguards in state parks. If we privatize that, took a little bit of money and privatized that, could we have the lifeguards there, because having been a lifeguard, I would like to see lifeguards there at least during the summer season, so is that something that we could privatize, do it cheaper than others," Corbett says. Privatizing the state’s liquor sales is among the measures Corbett says is a priority going into the fall session. He says he won’t rank his legislative wish list, because he doesn’t want to lock himself into a plan that denies the possibility of tradeoffs when the General Assembly reconvenes in September.

Privitizing parks is a baddddd idea. Look into the history of the National Parks -- you can see plainly that privitization will bring Disneyland to Yellowstone and Yosemite, skiing to the Tetons and Glacier, etc. McDonald's at Pine Grove. Hotels, motels, water rides. State lands and parks should be kept for all.
And I was also a lifeguard. That is not a good argument for privitizing. Corbett needs to focus on other forms of "waste" -- like lost revenue from not taxing fairly.

I don't understand the connection between privatization and lifeguards in state parks. Why can't the state charge a minimal usage fee to defray the costs? The same number of jobs are created, but without the profit factor.

I would like to know how he is going to justify furloughing all these state workers when hiring the privaite sector to take over all the prison medical staffing, park staffing and liquor store staffing. Who is in his pocket? He is still going to be paying unemployment to all the state staff he just furloughed, plus paying the private company. How is that saving money?
