Future of proposal to allow Sunday hunting in PA in doubt

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- State House lawmakers are voicing frustration with one of the biggest opponents of lifting Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting ban. The proposal would put the Pennsylvania Game Commission in charge of regulating hunting on Sundays, such as exactly which Sundays and exactly where the hunters could go. Among those against it is the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, which lawmakers called "uncompromising" in its position. Republican Representative Jeff Pyle of Armstrong County, says he doesn’t think the bill’s "ready to go." "I am about as on the fence as you get. NRA and the pro-Sunday hunting guys last weekend dropped a mailer on my district. ‘Contact me! Let me know what you think.’ Want to know what the count is?" he asked. "220 to 180 thus far, since last Saturday, in favor." The Farm Bureau and other groups say lifting the hunting ban would force nature enthusiasts to curb their activity for the sake of hunters. Sportsmen’s groups say keeping the old Blue Law on the books denies the state millions in annual economic activity that would result from allowing hunters to schedule a full weekend in Pennsylvania.

The only question the lawmakers have to ask themselves is; If this were put on a statewide ballot as a binding referendum, would it pass or fail?
The answer is it would fail by a wide margin, especially in the suburban and rural areas where it will have the most impact.
Note that it's the NRA and other national organizations leading the fight, not the residents of Pennsylvania.
A whopping 82% of landowners (farmers and Game Commission land access enrollees only) responding voted no on the expansion.
It's simple, the legislature needs to drop this entire issue once and for all(it has been proposed in the past several times and lost every time).
