Flooding puts a hurting on some midstate farmers' crops

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Dalmatia) -- The head of State Agriculture Department says farmers face huge losses after the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee. Ag Secretary George Greig says the contaminated floodwaters that inundated farms along and around the Susquehanna River means acres and acres worth of crops will likely be destroyed. During a tour of the Sterman Masser Potato Farms in Dalmatia, Dauphin County, he says he could smell the damage. "There are potatoes that have been underwater and now are rotting, you can smell in the fields, and it’s just unusable crops," he says. Greig says there are disaster assistance programs available, but the aid can’t cover all the potential costs to farmers. Even those with crop insurance will only recoup some of what they’ve lost. The secretary says the damage will without a doubt affect costs for consumers and food distributors as well, as farmers scramble to fill contracts with local markets without their expected harvest.
