Farm Show holds 10,000 competitions over the week

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- The Farm Show is a showcase for the best-of-the-best in the state's agriculture industry. Everything from swine to syrup is judged during 10-thousand competitions at the show. Kendra Brown of Breezy Acres Farm in Lebanon County showed "Diamond," the cow. Brown says she knows the shorthorn was selected as grand champion. "I think it was her depth of her body, her belly, how she looks, her hair has something to do with it, too," Brown says. Looks go a long way for plants, too. Larry Snyder of Mahantongo Valley Farms in Northumberland County explains what goes into an award-winning Christmas tree. "You need real strong branching, symmetry in the tree, good leader growth and color. You want to pick trees that have excellent color," Snyder says. The Farm Show also hosts events like the sheep-to-shawl competition, where a team races the clock to shear a sheep and knit the wool into a shawl. The event is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
