(Harrisburg) -- The fall season has officially begun, and the leaves are expected to start changing colors within the next couple of weeks. Ed Dix, with the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, says peak fall foliage season is slated to hit the midstate by the end of next month. Dix says chlorophyll in the leaves will begin to disintegrate, which will help turn the leaves red, orange, and yellow. "That breakdown process can be affected by temperature, and it seems like the best colors show up when we have cool nights and warm, bright days," he says. Dix says the state is one of the most colorful places to see fall leaves because of large variety of trees including sugar maple, oak, and hickory. He adds the leaves are expected to begin changing color in the Pocono Mountains in the northeastern part of the state.
