Drivers warned to be on lookout for deer crossings

Written by  Stephanie Reighart and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- Midstate drivers are being warned to be on the look out for deer. Roseanne Placey of the state Insurance Department says now through the end of the year is the peak season for crashes involving deer. "The best way to avoid these sorts of auto collisions is through attentive driving behavior," she says. "Be aware of any posted 'deer crossing' signs. These signs are generally placed in areas known to be active for deer." Placey notes where there is one deer, there are likely others around. PennDOT data show more than 3,100 people were injured and 43 died in more than 41,000 crashes involving deer between 2006 and 2010. Deer are most active at night between 6 and 9pm. Drivers are encouraged to check their auto insurance policies to make sure they would be covered in the event of a crash.
