Cumberland Valley rail trail backers buy more than 100 acres for path

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Carlisle) -- The group behind a bicycling and hiking trail in Cumberland County has purchased more than 100 acres of land to expand the pathway. The Cumberland Valley Rails-to-Trails council bought 107 acres from PPL Electric Utilities. The long, narrow strip of land was once the path of the old Cumberland Valley Railroad. A few portions of the corridor are still in private hands, and some neighbors have expressed concerns about the trail's development. The CVRTC hopes to eventually connect the newly-purchased path to its existing 11-mile rail trail that runs between Newville and Shippensburg. The new land purchase would make the trail more than 20 miles long and connect it to Carlisle.
