Counties granted funds to help increase safety around Three Mile Island facility

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Londonderry Township) -- Nearly half a million dollars is being donated to help increase safety around Three Mile Island Generating Station in Dauphin County. Exelon Nuclear, which owns and operates the nuclear power plant in Londonderry Township, will contribute $436,000 to emergency management agencies near the facility. Ralph DeSantis, a spokesman for TMI, says the money is to be used to protect against possible nuclear events as well as natural disasters. "We're talking about floods, fires, you know, hurricanes, the type of events that cause widespread damage and widespread concern among our neighbors," he says. DeSantis says emergency management agencies in Dauphin County and Londonderry Township will each receive $110,000, while $54,000 will be donated to organizations in Cumberland, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. He adds each municipality can decide if the money should go to safety equipment or emergency communications programs. The contribution was funded in part by the recent sale of TMI's Joint Information Center in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County.
