Corbett: Stay Home; Be Prepared

Written by  Scott Detrow, StateImpact Pennsylvania Reporter

(Harrisburg) -- Hurricane Irene has ground Philadelphia to a halt: its port is closed, and all bus and regional train service has been canceled. Governor Corbett is monitoring the city’s preparations, but he’s worried people outside the southeast aren’t fully prepared for the hurricane. The Republican used a Saturday afternoon press conference to send a message to people across Pennsylvania:  be prepared, be ready, and stay inside.  He said flooding could occur “as far [west] as Cambria County, depending on how the track of the storm is. The ground’s saturated. We’ve had a lot of rain in August. So it doesn’t take a lot to have a flash flood.” As of 6:15 PM, Irene’s eye was just below the Virginia border. It will likely travel up Pennsylvania’s eastern border Sunday morning. Corbett urged people to stay off the roads. “We’re worried about a lot of trees falling. You don’t want to be out getting hit by a tree,” he said. “They’re going to be blocking the roads, they’re going to be knocking out electricity. And you don’t want to be in the way of emergency personnel responding to situations.” “This is a good night to stay home,” he added. Pennsylvania National Guard units are on standby in central and eastern portions of the state, and Corbett said search and rescue teams are also on call. The governor is staying busy at PEMA headquarters. He spent most of Saturday taking part in federal and regional conference calls, and conferring with representatives from every state department inside the agency’s operations hub, which resembles NASA’s mission control room. “It’s going to be a long 72 hours, I would think,” said Corbett.  “Because I have to stress: when it does stop raining, it’s not going to stop flooding.”
