Civil rights activist cites gerrymandering in new legislative maps

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Harrisburg) -- A central Pennsylvania civil rights activist warns redistricting efforts across the country may not always provide certain groups equal representation when it comes to participating in politics. Melvin Johnson is the former chairman of the Fair Housing Council of the Capital Region and participated in the 1963 March on Washington that included Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. He tells witf's Radio Smart Talk he thinks the state's new maps on the federal and state levels are an example of gerrymandering. "We have people representing four or five different counties," he says. "They can no way service those areas properly, and they're stretched out strictly for ethnic or political reasons." Johnson says he's not against redistricting when population shifts occur, but state governments should not draw new district lines based on political party or ethnicity.
