Change in AlertPA notification system to take effect next month

Written by  Megan Lello and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- A system that automatically called Pennsylvania residents within a one- or two-mile radius of a state prison during an emergency will be discontinued next month. The state Department of Corrections will instead only notify residents about prison emergencies if they're signed up for the newer AlertPA system. Department Spokeswoman Susan McNaughton says participants can receive notifications through several methods. "It could be a voice message, an actual call to your landline telephone, you can get a call to your cell phone, and now, you know, with technology advancing so quickly, you can also receive text messages and e-mails," she says. McNaughton says the change is expected to save taxpayers about $38,000 a year.
