Businesses to "battle" during Salvation Army kettle campaign

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Harrisburg) -- The Salvation Army's familiar Red Kettle Campaign is underway with a new focus on social media this year. Rebecca Kleha with the Salvation Army Harrisburg says volunteers from midstate businesses and organizations will staff 25 red kettles in a competition to see who can raise the most money. She says the group is encouraging participants in the so-called "Battle of the Bells" to share their experiences on Facebook and update their progress on Twitter. "This is something that we've recognized as a very important business tool in reaching all generations, especially younger people. We figure by using social media it's a new spin and a new layer on reaching our audiences," Kleha says. She adds there will be more than 500 volunteer bell ringers. Contributions raised during the Red Kettle Campaign help feed, clothe and care for the needy in the midstate year round. The competition runs through December 31st.
