(Harrisburg) -- A new bill could help protect a central Pennsylvania historical site from ever having a casino as a neighbor. The legislation, drafted by Republican state Representative Paul Clymer of Bucks County, would ensure a casino is never built within ten miles of the Gettysburg National Military Park in Adams County. The move would also protect the ten-mile radius around the site of the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County. Clymer says he felt compelled to introduce a bill that would protect such properties. "It is our duty and responsibility to preserve and protect these two highly recognized military facilities," he says. But Gettysburg business owner Brendan Synnamon say historical sites could coexist with casinos if the memorials are well-maintained. "We need the ability to retain and preserve threatened historic sites," he says. "We need to do more to promote history-based and heritage tourism, which brings dollars and jobs to this commonwealth." Two previous plans to build casinos near Gettysburg have failed, while no proposals have been made to build a facility near the Flight 93 National Memorial.
