Beekeepers showcase PA apiary industry at Farm Show

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- Beekeepers are highlighting the importance of their industry during the Pennsylvania Farm Show this week. The 96th annual agricultural event features several apiaries -- places where beehives are kept. Lebanon County beekeeper David Anderson says the Commonwealth's bees offer a variety of honey. "Depending on the flower that the nectar came from to make the honey, you can get clover honey, alfalfa honey, buckwheat honey, goldenrod honey. They're all different flavors," Anderson explains. The Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association is giving demonstrations on beekeeping and honey making at the Farm Show. Beekeepers say it takes pollen from about two million flowers to make one pound of honey. The association has also been working to fight the so-called "colony collapse disorder," which is blamed for tens of thousands of bee die-offs across the country and poses a serious threat to the industry.
