(Harrisburg) -- A deputy secretary with the state Department of Public Welfare says he wants to clean house after an internal audit of an array of approved benefits claims revealed a misappropriation of funding. A benefits program for people with intellectual disabilities has been paying for all the wrong things -– and too many of them, according to the DPW’s Tim Costa. He says his inside estimate of how much state money was wasted on a variety of improper expenses is tens of millions of dollars. "The therapeutic cat. The payments were uncovered by an internal department audit, which will be finished next week. Senate Republican Pat Vance of Cumberland County is the majority chair of the Public Health and Welfare Committee. She says the cost of the program went up $58 million this year and there are about 16,000 people on its waiting list.
