(Carlisle) -- Several civilian positions at a Cumberland County military facility could be cut by the fall of next year. The U-S Army has proposed eliminating 30 jobs at the Army War College in Carlisle by September 20-12 as part of a nationwide effort to cut costs. Another 26 positions are on the chopping block at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Sergeants Major Course at Fort Bliss, Texas. But, Colonel Bobby Towery, deputy commanding officer at the facility in Carlisle, says there may be other ways to curb spending without getting rid of personnel. "Just because it's a reduction in an authorization, doesn't necessarily mean that someone becomes unemployed, and there's several other management tools out there that allow us to try and take care of the workforce," he says. "Some of those people may become eligible for early retirement and things like that." The proposal calls for cutting the Army Physical Fitness Research Institute and reducing other departments, such as the Center for Strategic Leadership and the Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute. Towery says he plans to hold a meeting to update employees about the changes next month.
