AAA reports fewer people making Labor Day weekend trips

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio PA

(Heathrow, Fl.) -- AAA reports fewer people will be traveling this Labor Day holiday weekend, but a greater percentage of those actually making trips will be going by car. The travel forecast estimates some 27.3 million people will be driving to their holiday destinations. That's about 87 percent of holiday travelers. AAA spokeswoman Christie Hyde says a recent survey shows more people will be making that trip in older cars. She says that underscores a travel club recommendation for mechanical inspections for any vehicle ahead of a long journey. "The vast majority of people traveling during the Labor Day holiday will be traveling by car, and you want to make sure you don't get stranded while you're on that Labor Day road trip," Hyde says. AAA forecasts 31.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Labor Day holiday weekend. That's a 2.4 percent decrease from the 32.3 million people who traveled one year ago.
