To launch its 30th anniversary season, The Susquehanna Chorale performed a concert titled "Legends Among Us" on May 21, 2011 at The Forum in Harrisburg. witf recorded this concert and is now proudly airing it on the radio on Sunday, October 2 at 8 p.m.
Renowned choral composers Dr. Robert Page and Alice Parker were guest conductors for the concert. Dr. Page is a founding member of Chorus America and has held positions as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Carnegie Mellon University and Music Director of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. Alice Parker is widely known for her arrangements of folksongs and hymns with Robert Shaw. Her professional choir, Melodious Accord, promotes choral music through concerts and workshops throughout the country.
Both led the Susquehanna Chorale and the Susquehanna Youth Chorale in their own arrangements and in an original piece by Dr. Page. At the time, witf had the opportunity to chat with both of these renowned musicians. You can hear our conversation with them here.
Since the performance, the founder of the Susquehanna Chorale, Linda Tedford, has been awarded a lifetime achievement award from the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania. First presented in 1998, the award is named for the late Elaine Brown, the Founder and Conductor of Singing City in Philadelphia, Pa., and is given each year to one individual for outstanding lifelong work and leadership in the choral art in Pennsylvania. Past recipients include two-time Grammy Award winner Robert Page, also a longtime mentor of Tedford’s, and the late TV and radio personality Fred Waring.
