Andrea Bocelli, the international superstar tenor, returns to Great Performances once again to delight fans with Andrea Bocelli: Love in Portofino, a new concert special in which he puts classical music aside for an evening of international favorites inspired by the breathtaking coastal setting of Portofino, Italy.

The Italian fishing village and upmarket resort is noted for its picturesque harbor and frequent celebrity visitors, as demonstrated by a kaleidoscopic photo montage featuring screen legends Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Eddie Fisher, Elizabeth Taylor, and current personalities ranging from Denzel Washington to Ellen DeGeneres.

With 16-time Grammy-winner David Foster as both music director and keyboard accompanist, Bocelli is joined by trumpeter Chris Botti. Under the stars, beside the shimmering harbor waters, and with a rapt audience that includes Paul Anka, Sir Michael Caine and Italian actress Ornella Muti, Bocelli performs some of the world’s most famous love songs, including “Senza Fine,” “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás,” “Bésame Mucho,” “Champagne,” “Love Me Tender” and in duet with the late, legendary Edith Piaf, “La Vie en Rose,” while his real-life love Veronica Berti looks on adoringly. Bocelli sings in six languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Neapolitan). The sensual sound is rounded out by Cuban, Brazilian and Portuguese rhythms.

Great Performances Andrea Bocelli: Love in Portofino is part of special programming on witf beginning March 31 at 9 p.m., and June 9 at 3 p.m.

Andrea Bocelli: Love in Portofino is, in essence, a sequel to his earlier Great Performances special, Amore. As with that concert, which featured timeless masterworks, the latest includes several beloved classics such as “Love Me Tender,” “Il Nostro Incontro” (the theme from Cinema Paradiso), “Sara Settembre” (better known to English-speaking audiences as Neil Diamond’s “September Morn,” and translated into Italian by Bocelli himself) and “La mia via” (“My Way”), with the composer sitting harborside.

Since Great Performances introduced American television audiences to Bocelli with 1997’s Romanza concert, Bocelli has been featured in a notable series of Great Performances specials, including Sacred Arias, Amore, Vivere, My Christmas and American Dream, his spectacular “Statue of Liberty” concert from New Jersey’s Liberty State Park. Andrea Bocelli Live in Central Park aired in December 2011. Bocelli was accompanied by the New York Philharmonic, under the direction of music director Alan Gilbert, the spectacular event being Bocelli’s special gift to New York City.

The Nickel Tour Series on Morning Edition
As families load up the car for the annual road trip this summer, NPR features some of the most engaging tour guides from around the country. The Nickel Tour series profiles the truly great rangers, docents, tram drivers, and other guides who make historical sites, natural wonders and tourist destinations come alive. The stories will have a solid sense of place, but will focus on the guides themselves. Listen in as they go through their day, find out why they do what they do, what excites them about their jobs, and go behind the scenes to find out what makes these guides tick.

The segments air between Memorial Day and Labor Day on Morning Edition.

Kids Series
Children are huge consumers of culture, gobbling up TV shows, books, games, apps and movies for hours every day -- but deep critical looks at the images and ideas they come away with are few and far between. There's little discussion about what kinds of cultural messages the creators thought they were sending, or what kinds of conclusions your child could draw about race, class, gender roles and religious values.

NPR's Cultural Desk puts a new critical focus on media for children with an extensive series that takes children and the ideas they encounter seriously. The segments go beyond ratings and sorting things into age-appropriate baskets and instead turn to thoughtful exploration of media for kids. Look for stories from Bob Mondello on the dominance of PG-rated movies, Laura Sydell on video games, Mandalit del Barco on licensing tie-ins for kids' movies, Neda Ulaby on the history of building toys like blocks and Legos, and Sonari Glinton on matchbook cars.

The series begins in June on witf on Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, and All Things Considered.

Library Series
Everyone owns public libraries and everyone has a stake in them. This summer, NPR's Arts Desk paints a picture of America through looking at public libraries and their role during a transformative technological moment, as the economy forces a reconsideration of municipal obligations and responsibilities.

The series explores big issues -- our collective copyright nightmare, how content can be consumed and distributed electronically, the digital divide, funding challenges, historic preservation and how a public space might best serve its community. Listeners discover places they didn't know about, and innovative local projects and passionate people committed to enrich the places where they live. The series reflects that sense of discovery and the pleasure you get from a great public library.

Listen for this series on witf this August.

The Comebacks
Ben Affleck won an Academy Award in his 20s for writing Good Will Hunting. In his 30s, he was in possibly the worst movie of all time, Gigli, with his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, and was the laughingstock of Hollywood. Now, close to age 40, he won another Oscar for Argo -- it's an incredible comeback.

NPR's National Desk takes a look at comeback stories from pop culture, politics, business and sports, to neighborhoods, small towns, fashions, and fads, in a series airing in July and August at different times throughout the day. People, places, things, animals and music are all ripe areas to report comebacks.

Crime In The City
Just a head's up: Morning Edition's annual series on crime novelists and the cities that inspire them returns this summer. More details coming soon!

More than 400,000 uninformed men and women died in World War II. Sixteen million served between 1941 and 1945 in the U.S. Armed Forces. Now, only one-and-a-half million remain, and they are in their 80s and 90s. Some were awarded medals for their valor, while many served with quiet distinction. Others played supporting roles at home or abroad. All Things Considered pays tribute to veterans of the Second World War who have died recently with a series of remembrances. The series begins Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 on witf.

Jake McNiece - Monday, May 27
In the first of the week-long remembrances of veterans of the Second World War who died this year, learn about Jake McNiece, who died at age 93. He was the leader of the "Filthy Thirteen," a crack U.S. Army demolition unit that inspired Robert Aldrich's macho classic The Dirty Dozen.

George Porter - Tuesday, May 28
George W. Porter fought for his country in World War II while battling racism at home as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. After he retired in the late '80s, Porter spoke about the airmen he served with -- reminding audiences of their distinguished service -- and that a pilot's skin color was no measure of his worth. He died this winter at age 91.

Mildred Manning - Wednesday, May 29
Mildred Manning died in March at age 98. She was a nurse who was a POW in 1942, and was held for 33 months along with more than six dozen other nurses from the Army and Navy called the "Angels of Bataan and Corregidor." She is thought to be the last of the surviving Angels.

Herman Boudreau - Thursday, May 30
Herman Boudreau was a retired command sergeant major in the Maine Army National Guard, a sergeant with the Maine State Police, and a longtime auxiliary police officer in Brunswick. His son and a daughter talk about his service.

Hollis Branting - Thursday, May 30
During World War II, Hollis Branting served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater from 1942-1945. He was in the 3217th Signal Service Battalion in General Eisenhower's communication unit headquartered in London, and lived through the London Blitz, receiving several commendations for his actions at that time.

Tad Nagaki - Friday, May 31
Tad Nagaki of Alliance, Nebraska was a veteran of the Office of Strategic Services and died about a month ago. Soon after the Emperor of Japan made his surrender announcement, the OSS parachute team was dispatched to Weishian China POW camp to ensure no harm came to the captives.

Is the FDA Killing Us? The Food and Drug Administration, the oldest comprehensive consumer protection agency in the U.S. federal government, is charged with protecting the public health. Under this mandate, it regulates drugs and medical devices for their safety and effectiveness. But is it a failing mandate? It’s long been argued that the FDA’s long and costly approval processes stifle innovation and keep life-changing treatments from the market. But the question remains: when it comes to public health, is it ever okay to sacrifice safety for speed?

PBS has announced a fall primetime line-up featuring a strong roster of wide-ranging programs. New highlights of the season include a series of specials commemorating the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s death; programs exploring American heritage from diverse viewpoints; the first PBS Independent Film Showcase; and captivating new dramas. Fall also marks the second PBS Arts Fall Festival, as well as the return (and a premiere) of acclaimed science programs.

PBS pays tribute to President Kennedy on the eve of the 50th anniversary of his assassination with intriguing new takes on the president’s life and death, anchored by “JFK,” a new four-hour, two-part special from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. A new episode from the science series NOVA, the history-focused SECRETS OF THE DEAD and other specials to be announced complete this special anniversary coverage.

A collection of programs focuses on the diversity of Americans’ ancestries and cultures, including the new unscripted, interactive series GENEALOGY ROADSHOW, which uses history and science to connect participants nationwide to their individual and family histories; LATINO AMERICANS, the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history of Latinos across 500 years; and from executive producer — and Harvard scholar — Henry Louis Gates, Jr. THE AFRICAN AMERICANS: MANY RIVERS TO CROSS, which chronicles the full sweep of black history in the United States.

The arts remain a staple of PBS programming, with the PBS Arts Fall Festival returning for a seven-week run celebrating music and Broadway classics, including NASHVILLE 2.0, a tribute to legendary country stars, a star-studded version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company and GREAT PERFORMANCES “Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn,” the superstar’s first Brooklyn concert since her childhood years. The PBS Independent Film Showcase airs this fall with documentaries from INDEPENDENT LENS and POV. GREAT PERFORMANCES premieres its ambitious four-part miniseries “The Hollow Crown,” combining Shakespeare’s Richard II, Henry IV (Parts I & II) and Henry V into a single chronological narrative.

PBS continues to stake out Sunday nights with enthralling dramas from MASTERPIECE, including “Foyle’s War, Series VII” for MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! and “The Paradise,” an adaptation of the beloved French novel by Emile Zola.

Science remains strong this fall, delving into how things are made wilder, faster, colder and safer with the new multi-part NOVA series, “Making Stuff With David Pogue,” and the new four-part series RAW TO READY (working title), which takes viewers inside factories to learn how basic ingredients are transformed into powerhouse machines.

AMERICAN MASTERS premieres “Billie Jean King” (working title), a film about the tennis great on the 40th anniversary of the tennis world’s 1973 Battle of the Sexes and King founding the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), as well as “Jimi Hendrix” (working title) with never-before-seen performance footage, photos, drawings and more. In addition to “JFK,” AMERICAN EXPERIENCE premieres “War of the Worlds,” revisiting the infamous radio dramatization on its 75th anniversary.

“It promises to be an exhilarating fall on PBS, with a vast array of attention-grabbing programming designed to entertain, educate and inspire audiences,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. “Among our many new and returning programs and specials are exceptional programs on President Kennedy, in the 50th year following his assassination, from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, NOVA and SECRETS OF THE DEAD; comprehensive, specials on American heritage that closely examine the rich cultural tapestry of America; and a vibrant slate of arts programming. Our strong fall season covers topics that will be attractive to viewers across all of the genres that made PBS great in the first place.”

PBS has announced that it will add the new series GENEALOGY ROADSHOW to its fall lineup. Part detective story, part emotional journey, GENEALOGY ROADSHOW will combine history and science to uncover the fascinating stories of diverse Americans. Each individual’s past will link to a larger community history, revealing the rich cultural tapestry of America. GENEALOGY ROADSHOW will air Mondays, September 23-October 14 at 9 p.m. EST.

“GENEALOGY ROADSHOW is an engaging, innovative program that reveals the bigger picture of our nation’s past, present and future,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of General Audience Programming for PBS. “With a diverse mix of stories in each episode, GENEALOGY ROADSHOW appeals to Americans interested in learning about their family histories. It also shows that no matter one’s heritage and background, everyone has a place in history.”

GENEALOGY ROADSHOW’s premiere season will feature participants from four American cities — Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco — who want to explore unverified genealogical claims, passed down through family history, that may (or may not) connect them to an event or a historical figure. These cities were chosen as American crossroads of culture, diversity, industry and history, with deep pools of potential participants and stories. After participants are chosen, experts in genealogy, history and DNA will use family heirlooms, letters, pictures, historical documents and other clues to hunt down more information. These experts will enlist the help of local historians to add color and context to the investigations, ensuring every artifact and every name becomes a clue in solving the mystery. Residents of Austin, Detroit, Nashville and San Francisco are invited and encouraged to submit their personal stories as GENEALOGY ROADSHOW will unearth family and community secrets, reveal notable relatives and discover unexpected stories that connect the past to the present. Many answers will be revealed on camera before a local audience, in a historic building relevant to the cities’ – and the participants’ – histories.

“It is rare and wonderful when one can produce a show in which literally everyone is qualified to be a part of it,” said executive producer Stuart Krasnow. “PBS is the perfect partner to produce a show that celebrates the richness of the individual, and the differences between us that make our country unique.”

THE GENEALOGY ROADSHOW has been a hit in Ireland, where national public broadcaster RTE commissioned the original format from producer Big Mountain Productions. “It just hit a nerve,” said Big Mountain executive producer Philip McGovern. “Everybody wants answers to questions about their own histories to help make sense of their lives today. We’ve had a lot of interest in the format internationally and are delighted PBS has picked it up.”

Episodes in the series include:

NASHVILLE
Nashville is a vibrant cultural crossroad in the American South. While it is the capital of country music and a centerpiece of Civil War history, it’s known for much more. The city rose to prominence within the shipping industry, and its post-Civil War prosperity led to an explosion in architecture, education and the arts. Its abundant opportunities led to population swells of Mexican, Cambodian and Iraqi immigrants. Nashville’s Jewish community laid roots in the area more than 150 years ago, and an influx of Kurdish immigrants in recent years has given the city its new nickname, “Little Kurdistan.”

AUSTIN
With the motto “Keep Austin Weird,” this city prides itself on uniqueness. The fast- growing metropolis has evolved into a hub for government, technology, culture and education. Austin boasts a strong sense of individuality that stems in part from its diverse history. With early Native-American settlements of Tonkawas and Comanches, central Texas’ rich culture includes Mexican, Asian, African-American and European communities.

DETROIT
While Detroit is known mainly for two things — cars and Motown — there is much more to the city, which boasts one of the most diverse populations in the country. After its settlement by French-Canadians, Detroit attracted a large number of Europeans and immigrants of Middle Eastern descent, making it now home to the largest Arab-American community in the country. As well, hundreds of thousands of African-Americans moved to Detroit from the rural southern U.S. as part of The Great Migration of the 20th century. Detroit was the first place in the country to have a stretch of concrete highway and a four-way, three-color traffic light.
It's a hard time to be a saver. The average interest rate for a savings account at a major bank is a measly 0.1 percent, according to Bankrate.com. If you think that's practically nothing, you're wrong. It's worse. If your savings are stashed in one of those accounts, you're actually losing money to inflation, which is running at a 1.5 percent annual rate. Given those dismal numbers, what do you do with your savings?

NPR's senior business editor Uri Berliner sets out to find out in Dollar for Dollar, a weekly series that explains how various investments work. He'll take $5,000 from his personal savings and explore the options, from stocks to real estate to buying consumer goods in bulk to acquiring art.

While Uri decides what do with his money, he won't offer financial advice or make recommendations. Instead, each story will peel away the jargon and complexity of investing with concrete, real-life examples. If you've ever wondered what dividends do, how fees affect returns in mutual funds, or what a real estate investment trust is, you'll find these stories useful. Dollar for Dollar segments air each week, beginning Monday, May 20, on Morning Edition on witf FM.

Sad Savings - Monday, May 20
It's a hard time to be a saver. The return on a savings account doesn't even keep up with inflation. That's led many savers to wonder what they should do with their money. NPR's Uri Berliner takes $5,000 out of his own personal savings and explores various investment opportunities.

Bulk Buying - Week of May 27
As part of his investing adventure, NPR's Uri Berliner tries his hand at bulk buying. The idea: stock up on goods now that you know you'll need later. It's a hedge against inflation, but figuring out what to buy -- and how much -- isn't so easy.

Cheap Funds - Week of June 3
Investing in the stock market can be a daunting experience. There are so many stocks, so many funds to choose from, and none of us knows for certain which ones will rise in the future. As NPR's Uri Berliner reports, what we can control are the fees we pay for the equities we buy.

Buying Art - Week of June 10
The Internet makes collecting and even investing in art accessible to all. NPR's Uri Berliner pays $450 for a painting he's only seen online by an artist he's never heard of. Is it an investment or simply a painting he's happy to have hanging on the wall? Does the answer matter?

Real Estate Investing - Week of June 17
The simplest way to invest in real estate is through a REIT, or real estate investment trust. It's how many Americans include real estate in their retirement accounts. REITs generate income for investors by leasing the commercial properties they own and manage. As NPR's Uri Berliner reports, what counts as "real estate" in a REIT keeps expanding.
