A Brief Touch of Spring

Written by  Mitzi Trostle

As I write this for you, today’s temperatures are expected to crack the 60-degree mark and I hope you have something fun planned that will help you take advantage of this early touch of spring! As temperatures drop back to more February-like lows over the weekend, we have lots of great TV and radio to help distract you away from the return to winter. Willie Nelson, Jimmy Carter, an in-depth look at the revolution in Cairo, a new multimedia project called Beyond the Bio and much, much more all await you during this final, full week of February!

ON WITF-TV

The Red-Headed Stranger himself comes to WITF Saturday night at 11:00. Don’t miss Willie Nelson & Asleep at the Wheel on Austin City Limits. If you love all aspects of this brilliant outlaw as much as I do, I know you’ll be there!

Presidents’ Day is Monday and we continue our look at some of the people who have had the privilege of leading our country. Democrat Jimmy Carter came into office in 1977 as a peanut farmer from a small town in Georgia with a promise never to lie to the American people. Monday at 9pm, an American Experience film on Jimmy Carter traces his fast political climb, dramatic fall from grace and unpredicted comeback. Producer, writer and director Adriana Bosch says, “Few stories better illustrate the intersection of character and leadership than the story of Jimmy Carter. The very qualities that got him elected – tenacity, religious certitude and an absolute confidence in his abilities – made it nearly impossible for him to govern.”

One of the things that I love best about public media is its immediacy to tackle an issue – and the story behind the story – in a way that no other media outlet can or does. Wednesday at 10pm, FRONTLINE: Revolution in Cairo will present a special edition of its new newsmagazine-format program about the demonstrations and political unrest on the streets of Cairo. FRONTLINE dispatches teams to Cairo, going inside the youth movement that helped light the fire on the streets. Also in the program, veteran Middle East correspondent Charles Sennott of GlobalPost lands in Cairo to take a hard look at Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood – the most well-organized and powerful of the country’s opposition groups – as the new fight for power in Egypt begins to take shape.

ON WITF 89.5, 93.3, HD2, ONLINE

Excellence can be found in many fields of endeavor from business to politics, medicine, science and the arts. Who are the people of excellence in Central Pennsylvania and what makes them tick? Beyond the Bio is WITF’s newest multi-media series, a monthly Q & A with Central Pennsylvanians who have made an important contribution to our region, the nation or beyond. We’ll hear from philanthropists, artists, politicians, judges, activists, CEOs, inventors and physicians who will share their insights and the ingredients of their success. Tuesday during Morning Edition and All Things Considered, WITF’s Melanie Herschorn talks with Camp Hill’s Ann Lyon, a national champion of civil rights.
