Barns of the Susquehanna Valley is a new documentary exploring historic barns in Pennsylvania's lower Susquehanna Valley.  It will broadcast on WITF June 4 at 8:00pm.

The documentary explores the agricultural, architectural, and historical significance of barns indigenous to south central Pennsylvania, and features interviews with farmers, landowners, historians, architects, authors, preservationists, and other barn enthusiasts.

Jonathan Slade and his wife Novia Campbell spent two and a half years traveling the lower Susquehanna Valley to learn about these agricultural landmarks, with help from experts like barn historian Greg Huber from Hellertown; barn historian Robert Ensminger from Bethlehem; Hanover-based architect Jill Rohrbaugh, and historic preservation specialist David Maher.

Star Barn

Highlights include the Star Barn which was completely disassembled and moved from Lower Swatara Township to Elizabethtown in 2016 - 2017; the Silverstone Inn and Barn in Lancaster, which has been renovated into a wedding venue; the popular Tomato Barn in Washington Boro, home of the Jet-Star Tomato; the Ruth family barn in Spring Grove, which contains a working barber shop; and the McPherson stone barn on the Gettysburg National Military Park, occupied by both the Union and Confederate armies during the first day of the Civil War battle.

Jonathan Slade is an Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker. He has produced a number of programs for Maryland Public Television, including Eatin' Crabs: Chesapeake Style, Historic Barns of Maryland, and Electric Road Trip. Barns of the Susquehanna Valley premiered on Maryland Public TV in October. Slade is also Chair of the Department of Communication & Cinema at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD.
