A look at the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania

Later this month WITF joins Pennsylvania Public Media stations for focused, statewide coverage on the opioid epidemic. Thursday March 29 is dedicated to discussing the impact of opioids on our friends, neighbors and loved ones.  More coverage continues this year culminating in a week of additional programming in September. 

8:00pm - HealthSmart: Front Line of the Opioid Crisis -  First responders are on the front line of the opioid epidemic. They re often first on the scene of an overdose. PA is supplying first responders with the opioid overdose reversal drug - naloxone. How often are first responders using the drug? Watch now...

8:30pm - HealthSmart: The Opioid Epidemic - This is an encore of an episode from 2017.  In recent years, there has been a significant increase in deaths resulting from heroin and prescription opioids. This epidemic has spread across Pennsylvania as currently one in four families struggle with a substance abuse problem. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, in 2015 there were at least 3,383 overdose deaths, approximately 9 deaths per day in Pennsylvania alone. Are efforts to get a handle on the epidemic paying off? We'll check in with those interviewed in 2015. Watch now...

9:00pm - Broken: Women - Familes - Opioids - Opioid addiction is destructive across all demographics. But compared to men, a woman's addiction can have more devastating implications. The addiction may begin with one woman, but consequences spread to vulnerable people around her. Some children are born addicted, while others face uncertain futures because of addicted mothers. Many children are placed in foster care, but an increasing number are being raised by grandparents and extended family - further disrupting lives. The documentary explores how opioid addiction among women is breaking the family bond and changing the fabric of society. Watch now...
