South America correspondent Lulu Garcia-Navarro will be the new host of Weekend Edition Sunday. She officially takes over this Sunday, January 8.

For her first Sunday in the host chair, Lulu will get to know the new mayor of Richmond, VA, Leonard Stoney, who was sworn in last weekend. Stoney is 35 years old, it's his first time holding elective office, he won his first ever political race, and most people have never heard of him. He was the first in his family to go to college and the first to finish high school. On Sunday, January 8, Lulu will speak with him after his first full week in office and she'll continue to check in with him for the next year.

Lulu will also start a new, regular segment that explores the intersection between sports and culture -- a new approach to sports for Weekend Edition, focusing less on the game played on the field and more on how sports reflects issues affecting society.

Weekend Edition continues to feature interviews with newsmakers, artists, scientists, politicians, musicians, writers, theologians and historians. And the highlight for many listeners is the puzzle segment with Puzzlemaster Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times.

Rachel Martin who previously hosted Weekend Edition Sunday is now co-hosting Morning Edition along with David Greene and Steve Inskeep.
