Written by Fred Vigeant, Director of Programming and Promotions for TV and Radio | Mar 13, 2014 11:13 AM

NPR looks at the ways retirement is changing, focusing on the ways work in some form is increasingly part of retirement. Many employees are choosing "gradual retirement," where employees stay working part-time for their old employer. Some people are being rehired out of retirement because their old companies need their expertise. Others are setting up new businesses in retirement and becoming entrepreneurs -- often for the first time. The series airs for three weeks starting March 18 on All Things Considered on witf.

Topic include:

  • Gradual Retirement
  • Rural Retirement
  • Keeping Working
  • Latino Retirement
  • Retirement Entrepreneurs

Also take a listen to a recent episode of To the  Best of Our Knowledge. It's the "silver tsunami" - the massive numbers of people now entering their senior years.  And for all those now retiring? They’re trying to figure out what to do with the rest of their lives. This episode originally aired in January, you can hear it on-demand at their website

Once again, many people have large amounts of debt and high expenses with which they must contend. It just means that in order to save for retirement, a tougher budget is required. Track spending with free tools like Mint.com, review monthly expenses and see was can be cut down. If you can refinance loans at a lower rate, that should prove helpful. Any surplus money that comes from cuts should be saved for retirement.
