Last week The Story spoke with 24-year-old Mayor Alex Morse, who has been running Holyoke, Mass., for a year now, and has made progress in crime prevention and revitalizing the downtown of the old paper mill city. He makes a point to talk with young people in his native town, speaking at schools, including his old high school.
Morse talks about being bullied during school, starting his high school's first gay-straight alliance, and coming out in front of the entire school. He became the mayor of Holyoke just a few years later and continues to speak about diversity, respect and GLBT issues at local schools.
