witf provides your soundtrack to Christmas with a spectacular line-up of music, stories, and traditions. Our music specials begin 6pm Christmas Eve on witf fm and conclude at midngiht. Christmas music resumes after Morning Edition Christmas Day at 9am and continues through 3pm. Here is what to expect in detail on witf fm:
Welcome Christmas – 6:00pm-7:00pm
Bring a Torch! This year's program puts the focus on old French carols, alongside two world premieres in the annual VocalEssence/American Composers Forum Christmas carol contest. The new carols call for the intriguing combination of men's chorus with English horn. Long a favorite from their appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, VocalEssence rings in the season with an all-new Welcome Christmas! It's an hour of joyful holiday music featuring the Minneapolis-based chorus, VocalEssence, and hosted for the fourteenth year by APM's John Birge.
Festival of 9 Carols and Lessons – 7:00pm-9:00pm
A live stereo music and spoken-word broadcast from the chapel of King's College in Cambridge, England. The 30-voice King's College Choir performs the legendary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service of Biblical readings and music.
A Chanticleer Christmas – 9:00pm-10:00pm
A Chanticleer Christmas is American Public Media's one-hour celebration of the season as told through the glorious voices of Chanticleer, the 12-voice San Francisco-based men's choir. The program spans the globe and the centuries — from England in the 1300s to new arrangements of classic and contemporary carols.
Leroy Anderson Christmas Special – 10:00pm-11:00pm
Celebrate the holidays with the music of Leroy Anderson. This one hour program features music of classic Christmas arrangements and original music by Leroy Anderson. It is hosted by conductor Leonard Slatkin and the composer's son Kurt Anderson, and features recorded performances of Leroy Anderson’s Christmas Music with Leonard Slatkin conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra, and Leroy Anderson conducting is “Pops” Concert Orchestra. Listeners will also hear Leroy Anderson talking about how he wrote some of his famous Christmas music and what Christmas means to him.
Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Special – 11:00pm – 12:00am
Warm up to the music of Christmas with The Bells of Christmas from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir with favorites such as: "How Far is it to Bethlehem;" "Noel Noel;" "Ding Dong! Merrily on High;" "O Tannenbaum;" and "Ring, Christmas Bells"
On Christmas Day the same schedule repeats from Christmas Eve on witf. The programs will air in the same order beginning at 9:00am and ending at 3pm.
