We asked each of the hosts who will be bringing you these programs live several questions so that you get to know them better! Read their responses below:
Favorite witf TV Program & Why: Sesame Street is a favorite. I love hearing my daughter use a word she learned from her favorite monster friends. The latest is “soggy”. She loves to announce that she is soggy at the pool and in the tub. They were here for me as a child and now they are here for me as a father.
Best thing witf does for the community: I am a huge fan of “Ready Set Go… Kindergarten”. Watching hundreds of kids ride a bus for the first time, and hearing the hope, fears, and humorous stories from parents as they help their children prepare for this change moves me and gives me comfort for the day my kids head to meet their Kindergarten teacher and classmates.
Favorite thing to do on the weekends: Playground and pool time with my family. That of course goes hand in hand with that quiet moment when I finally get to sit next to my wife after the kids are in bed.
Favorite thing to order when out with friends: Small plates. There is nothing like filling a table with plate after plate of unique flavors, sharing them, and discussing them.
Best thing about living in Central PA: It is a short drive from so many amazing places. Theaters, museums, stadiums, parks, and scenic views.
Favorite witf TV Program & Why: Frontline. I love the documentary format. I respect how much work goes into producing these shows and enjoy getting lost in them.
Favorite Pledge Program: Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey. I loved this documentary about Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind Elmo. Kevin was born near my hometown in Maryland and, like many of us, he had a childhood dream. It was inspirational to watch him turn that dream into reality.
Best thing witf does for the community: witf inspires learning. So many of us have seen curiosity ignite in the eyes of our little ones while watching an episode of Sesame Street. Witf does the same thing for adults through programs like P.O.V. and Smart Talk.
Favorite thing to cook for the family: I love to cook in the crockpot. Who doesn’t like coming home to a meal that’s ready to eat?! Growing up, my mom would make pot roast often. Now it’s one of my family’s favorites. I also like making Italian food like baked ziti and spaghetti.
Hobbies & How you picked them up: I love taking photos. With a new baby in the house, I have plenty of opportunities! I’ve always been fascinated with photography. My interest started back in high school when I took photos for our school yearbook and newspaper. I love taking our baby outside and letting her explore while snapping away.
Favorite Pledge Program: Alone in The Wilderness – The Story of Dick Proenneke. Mr. Proenneke’s storytelling, matched with his carpentry skill, ingenious craftsmanship and endurance through Alaskan winters will forever be classic.
Best thing witf does for the community: witf free, family-fun and educational events are the best!
Best thing about working for witf: Meeting fans and members! Whenever I meet someone new and they learn that I work for witf, the praise, the connections, the stories I hear are truly touching! witf fans learn so much from our programming, love what we bring to the community and are truly grateful for all of the contributions from every witf employee. It may not be listed as a benefit in the employee handbook, but appreciation and gratitude from the witf membership is a great perk!
Favorite thing to order when out with friends: Right now I can’t get enough of the shark tacos at Sturges Speakeasy! Light, refreshing, served with a side of boardwalk-style fries. Yum!
Hobbies & How you picked them up: I absolutely love nerdy word games… Crossword puzzles, Scrabble, Boggle, Hang Man - I’m always up for a word challenge. My earliest memories of loving word games goes back to playing board games with my Mom in the family basement. We started with Boggle, and then moved on to UpWords (a form of Scrabble where you can add letters vertically and horizontally) and then Scrabble when I was older. Now when my grandma, my mom and I get together, we’ll have three generations spending hours in the kitchen solving crossword puzzles as a team.
Favorite witf TV Program (anything on PBS) & Why: Great Performances. To be able to experience the world's greatest talent performing in the world's greatest venues is priceless.
Favorite witf FM Program & Why: "Smart Talk." It demonstrates why a local public radio station is so important.
Best thing about working for witf: Representing one of Central PA's flagship institutions and realizing the way in which witf enriches the lives of so many people in so many ways.
Favorite thing to do on the weekends: Go to a play or concert in one of the many great venues throughout the central PA region. Spend a beautiful fall day in Beaver Stadium.
Hobbies & How you picked them up: Travel, following Penn State sports, theater, staying in touch with friends and former colleagues (after family, nothing is more important than friends).
Best thing about living in Central PA: The variety of natural beauty, history and cultural activities, the warmth of the people, the ease of getting everywhere, and the access to some of the country's greatest cities.
