Father's Day and More at witf

Written by Mitzi Trostle | Jun 17, 2011 6:43 PM

Hi!  I’m writing this for you at about 10:30 Friday morning and grinning from ear-to-ear as I type.  My years spent with witf – both as a consumer/donor and as a staff member - have been remarkable, filled with stellar programming and thoughtful experiences.  But this morning was almost too cool for words, as I sat shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the world’s most memorable character actors, William Sanderson.  Bill has enjoyed roles in vehicles as varied as the Bob Newhart Show and the major motion picture Blade Runner and more recently as the hotelier and town mayor, E. ON witf TV

Dengue_Fever_2Public television has always been committed to bringing you concerts from the biggest names in the musical industry and Saturday night fare such as Austin City Limits, Live from the Artist’s Den and Sun Studio Sessions also introduces us to the next generation of musical geniuses.  Tomorrow night at 10:30 don’t miss witf’s new weekly music series, On Canvas.  We’ll spend time getting to know the hot, young band Dengue Fever captured live in concert at Johnny Brenda’s.

BonecrusherVery few people have played a role of importance in my own life that equal that of my “daddy.”  As we head into Father’s Day this Sunday, may I say that I hope you are lucky enough to feel that way too!  As a special tribute to a father’s love, I can’t tell you how pleased I am to share the indie film, Bonecrusher, with you Sunday at 7pm.  In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, a young coal miner toils deep underground but despite harsh working conditions, he takes fierce pride in carrying on a family tradition.  He wields the same hammer that was used by the man he loves more than anything; his father, Luther Chaffin, nicknamed Bonecrusher.  Luther was once a strong, young man too, but now at 61, he’s withered and sick; coal dust and cancer have ravaged his lungs.  Bonecrusher is a stark journey to the coal fields of Virginia and an account of the love between a father and son and the powerful bond they share.  Watch it with your dad, if you can.  You’ll never forget it!

outinamerica_screen_smIn conjunction with National Gay & Lesbian Pride Month, PBS, witf & Emmy award-winning director Andrew Goldberg present Out in America, Tuesday at 8pm.  The first of its kind, Out in America is a more realistic portrait of LGBT life than almost anything seen on TV before.  Personal narratives are culled from celebrities and everyday people across all regions of the country, from urban to rural, and trace individuals’ hopes and struggles in striving for their ideals of equality and social change.  At witf, we encourage you to “Live inspired,” and I can’t think of a program in recent history that better speaks to that challenge.  I think you will love this film and yes, find it downright inspiring!

kings_of_pastryStick around Tuesday night at 10:00 for the primetime debut on witf of P.O.V.  I’ve wanted to bring you P.O.V. (Point Of View) in primetime for quite a while now, and I believe this hip, edgy, independent film series will hold you spellbound.  Trust me, even if you think a particular film may not interest you, I can bet you it will!  Tuesday night’s episode is Kings of Pastry as award-winning filmmakers turn their sights on the competition for the best pastry artisan of France!

Abe_and_Mary_2Other stuff quickly, too good not to mention … Monday at 10pm don’t miss Part I of the American Experience:  Abraham and Mary Lincoln, A House Divided and don’t forget Globe Trekker is also available for you now in prime time Thursday evening at 8:00.  We’ve had tremendous viewer feedback just since last week’s premier episode, so Get in the Gondola - this week we travel to Venice!

ON witf 89.5

Dave_EggarWell known to the Echoes audience, Grammy-nominated cross-over artist Dave Eggar performs live in the witf performance studio tomorrow night from 9-11:00.  Dave has played with artists as diverse as Evanescence, The Who, Josh Groban, Coldplay, Beyonce, Pearl Jam, Kathleen Battle, Phil Ramone and Hannah Montana!  I was introduced to Dave through a mutual friend and when he found out I worked in public media at witf, he offered to come lend a hand in any way he could – can you believe it – but that’s just the kind of guy he is.  With a culturally-diverse band of global musicians, Dave will play selections from his recent album, Kingston Morning, and chat with witf’s Joe Ulrich.  Cary Burkett and I will be on hand to encourage your financial support.  Hope to hear from you!

witf OUT AND ABOUT!

Mount_RushmoreFinally, we’ve been privileged to participate in a cultural partnership with our friends at The Gettysburg Festival for several years now, and they really outdid themselves for this year’s festival  Last week, witf staff, and maybe you, too, enjoyed a live, sold-out performance from the a cappella group Straight No Chaser.   Tonight, join witf’s Cary Burkett as he hosts The Presidents of Mount Rushmore at the Majestic Theatre and none other than comedy legend, Bob Newhart, takes center stage at the Majestic tomorrow night.  Check out all the details online at www.witf.org!
