(York) -- A fundraiser has been set up for the family of a York City Police officer who died in the line of duty this week.

Officer Alex Sable, 37, died Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest during a SWAT training in Baltimore County over the weekend. He had been training to be a member of York County's Quick Response Team.

Friends have set up a YouCaring.com page to support Sable's family, according to a release from the City of York. As of Friday afternoon, the page had raised nearly $4,000 of its $50,000 goal.

The money raised will go directly to Sable's family for living expenses and education for his three children.

Sable, who lived in Lancaster County with his wife and kids, was a member of the York City Police Department for four years and previously served as a U.S. Marine for eight years.

"Officer Sable was a respected member of the York City Police Department and a friend to all," the fundraising page says. "He was a loving supporting husband, devoted father, loving son and brother. He will be deeply missed and greatly loved."

Those who wish to donate can do so at www.youcaring.com/thesablefamily-1185876.

Since Sable's passing, the York City Police Department has received an outpouring of support from emergency responders.

About 80 police officers on bicycles made a detour through York Thursday to honor Officer Sable before continuing on their way to Washington, D.C., for the 2018 Police Unity Tour.

And on Thursday night, the York City Fire Department posted photos on Facebook of the fire station glowing with blue lights in Sable's memory.

"During the recent loss of Firefighters Flanscha and Anthony, the men and women of the York City Police Department (York, Pa) stood by us," the York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services wrote on their Facebook page. "They provided escorts, traffic control, support, care, and compassion. They treated our fallen with dignity and respect. One of those officers was Alex Sable who lead the escort as the bodies of Ivan and Zach were transported to Allentown for autopsies. He remained with them until their return to York demonstrating genuine brotherhood in our time of need.

"We now stand by the York City Police Department and mourn the loss of Officer Sable, badge 187, who died in the line of duty on May 9th. We offer our condolences to the officers and their families, of the York City Police Department, and the friends and family of Officer Sable."
