(Harrisburg) -- The deadline to file state income tax returns is fast approaching.  April 17th to be exact.

State Department of Revenue spokesman Jeffrey Johnson is urging those who've yet to file, to do so electronically.

"We have an online system, PA Direct File, that makes it very simple I think for people to file their tax returns.  I would encourage people to check out that resource and to use that," he said.

Johnson says the department will be expanding the hours of its taxpayer services and information center this week to help those with filing questions.

So far the department has received more than 3.4 million personal income tax returns for the 2017 tax year.
