(Harrisburg) -- It's about to take a little longer for people in the 717 area code in central Pennsylvania to make phone calls.

The state Public Utility Commission says on August 26th, callers will have to start using the 10-digit number that includes the area code for all calls in the 16 county region served by 717.

After that date, callers who don't use the 717 area code will get a recording telling them to try again, using 10 digits.

The PUC suggests people update contacts on cellphones and other devices.

It's the next step toward the introduction of a new "overlay" area code, 223 -- which will start being used once all 717 numbers have been handed out.

But, that won't happen before September 26th.
