(East Stroudsburg) -- Pocono Health System will be absorbed by the Lehigh Valley Health Network in a merger that takes effect on New Year's Day.

The health systems announced Wednesday they have received regulatory approval to merge. The merger was announced in May 2015.

Pocono Medical Center will become Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono.

The Pocono Health System's president and chief executive, Jeff Snyder, will step down. Elizabeth Wise, the current chief operating officer, will become acting president.

Pocono Medical Center said in mid-December that it planned to lay off 61 registered nurses.
