(Strinestown)_ State police say a man was shot and killed on a central Pennsylvania interstate after authorities said he tried to drag a state trooper into a cement median.

Corporal Ryan Lawrence said the man fled Tuesday after a traffic stop in the southbound lanes of Interstate 83. In York County.

Police said the trooper was dragged for about three-tenths of a mile, and the driver tried to drag him ``into the cement center median, causing the high probability of death to the trooper.''

He said the trooper ``while in fear for his safety and the public at large'' fired, hitting the driver.

Police said the suspect was provided medical aid but died at the scene.

His name hasn't been released. The trooper sustained injuries that don't appear to be life-threatening.
