(Harrisburg) -- A new area code is coming to parts of the midstate.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission says new numbers in the existing 717 area will soon get a 223 area code.

The number was picked by a neutral party that oversees area codes across Pennsylvania.

It's expected that starting late next year, new numbers will get the 223 area code.

The PUC had earlier announced the plan to give all new numbers the area code, known as an overlay.
