(Pottsville) -- A mentally ill woman in Schuylkill County who tried to drown her one-month-old daughter has been sentenced to probation instead of prison.

33-year-old Rachel Foose has been sentenced to five years' probation by a Schuylkill County judge.

Police say they were called to the woman's West Penn Township home in October 2015 after Foose reported trying to drown the girl, but stopped.

Officers say she told them she tried to drown the baby because she "couldn't handle it.''

Foose had been charged with attempted homicide and more serious felony crimes, but was sentenced after pleading guilty to a lesser misdemeanor charge of child endangerment.

The district attorney's office agreed to the plea deal that requires Foose to continue treatment for her mental illness.

Authorities haven't said who's caring for the child.
