(Harrisburg) -- A 20-year-old man who authorities say was holding a knife to his mother's throat before being fatally shot by police in Harrisburg had been arrested three times last year for domestic incidents involving his mother.

Authorities have said police on Sunday saw Earl Pinckney holding a knife against Kim Thomas' throat. They shot him when he failed to comply with orders to drop the knife. Thomas is disputing that account, insisting her son didn't have a knife.

Thomas had filed for a protection from abuse order in December, alleging her son poked her body with a knife, threw her down and beat her.

Thomas didn't appear at follow-up hearings and her request was denied.

Pinckney had previously pleaded guilty to fighting with people inside his home and threatening his mother and others in two other incidents.
