Bald eagle crippled by leg trap in Franklin County recovering

Written by The Associated Press | Aug 29, 2016 4:39 AM

(Hanover) -- A bald eagle crippled by a leg trap in Franklin County is recovering in a wildlife rehabilitation center.

The first-year hatchling was apparently caught in the fur trap and managed to free itself, but lost a talon on each foot in the process.

Wendy Looker of Rehabitat Inc. in Hanover said a woman found the eagle last week in her yard in Fayetteville, and it may have walked up to a mile from the trap.

Looker said the absence of the talons would place the young bird at a disadvantage, so the bird will be sent to a long-term education center in a week or so.

The Game Commission is investigating whether the fur trap was placed illegally, and if so, who placed it.
