Chambersburg man drowns in St. Thomas pond

(Chambersburg) -- A 21-year-old Chambersburg man lost his life over the Fourth of July holiday weekend in an accidental drowning in a Franklin County pond.

According to State Police, Chambersburg, the body of Christian Edenilson Gonzalez was found Monday in the pond in the 9000 block of Mountainbrook Road and recovered.

Franklin County 911 first received a report of a possible drowning at 8:52 a.m. Several fire and EMS units responded, and several dive teams from Cumberland, Dauphin, Huntingdon, Mifflin and Washington (Md.) counties responded to assist with the recovery of Gonzalez' body. Fire and EMS responders from St. Thomas, Chambersburg, Fayetteville and Merceresburg also assisted at the scene.

A number of friends and family members gathered nearby on a bridge on Community Center Road as crews continued the search and recovery of their loved one. A Public Opinion photographer observed them consoling one another, holding each other and praying.

A number of people commenting on a post on this story on Facebook indicated the pond is a popular fishing and swimming spot.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
