(Philadelphia) -- A high wind advisory goes into effect this afternoon for the entire midstate.

The National Weather Service in State College says wind gusts could reach up to 50 miles-per-hour in some areas.

Forecasters says the advisory is in effect until midnight and covers much of the state from Philadelphia up to Scranton and the Poconos and west to Altoona.

Only the western-most edge of Pennsylvania is excluded.

The weather service urges people to secure patio furniture and other outdoor objects that could blow away and cause damage.

Winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with the strongest gusts coming in the evening hours.

Power outages and downed tree limbs are possible.

The advisory extends from Maryland up to Massachusetts, and includes the entire states of New Jersey, Connecticut and most of New York.
