Members of the York City Police Honor Guard carry a flag to the Veteran's Honor Guard of York County during the memorial service of retired York city police officer and Schaad Detective Agency security officer Ronald Heist in the Utz Arena of the York Expo Center on Saturday, March 26, 2016. Heist was killed March 20 during a shooting at a Pennsylvania Turnpike toll plaza in Franklin County.

(York) -- Hundreds of people attended a memorial service yesterday for a retired York police officer who was fatally shot in a robbery attempt at a rural Pennsylvania Turnpike toll plaza.

York city police officials and uniformed officers were among the 300 to 400 people attending the service for retired Officer Ronald Heist held at the York Expo Center's Utz Arena.

Heist and toll collector Danny Crouse were killed March 20 at the Fort Littleton exchange about 60 miles west of Harrisburg.

The shooter, Clarence Briggs, was then killed by state police troopers.

Heist worked for the county parks department after retiring from the city police force in the 1990s, and several park rangers were also among those at the service, which featured a pipe and drum corps and an honor guard.
