(Harrisburg) -- A state Supreme Court justice is stepping down in a widening scandal over explicit and offensive emails he and others exchanged with friends and lawyers.

Justice Michael Eakin's decision today makes him the second member of the state's high court to quit over the past 18 months over the email scandal.

The move marks the latest fallout since embattled state Attorney General Kathleen Kane began releasing hundreds of emails to the media and ethics agencies.

Kane faces perjury and other charges that she claims resulted from her taking on the old boys' club of Pennsylvania law enforcement.

The 67-year-old Eakin, a Republican, has been on the state Supreme Court since 2002.

Justice Seamus McCaffery, a Democrat, retired in 2014 after being suspended by the court for his role in swapping offensive emails.
