(Fort Indiantown Gap) -- Fort Indiantown Gap will be conducting prescribed burns on approximately 2,500 acres between March 7 and May 20.

The burns will be conducted as humidity, wind and temperature conditions permit, and specific burn announcements will be posted on the installation's Facebook page, according to a news release. They will take place between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., and local residents may notice smoke in the area of Fort Indiantown Gap.

Prescribed burns are used to reduce the amount of combustible material that would otherwise naturally exist in wilderness areas, the news release said.

The installation planned to conduct prescribed burns Monday on 15 acres, according to its Facebook page.
