(Lancaster, N.Y.) -- Supermarket company Ahold USA says it will transfer its warehouse operations out of the Buffalo area in New York in a move that will eliminate 600 jobs.

Pennsylvania-based Ahold says the decision will affect warehouses run by its American Sales Company in the suburbs of Lancaster and Cheektowaga in New York state.

The operations will be transferred to C&S Wholesale Grocers facilities in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and South Hatfield, Massachusetts.

Ahold says the C&S facilities are in better locations to serve its grocery stores.

The company says the transition should be completed by August and that full-time workers will be offered severance packages.

Ahold supermarkets include Stop & Shop and Giant Carlisle.
