Expert: when big health systems merge, higher prices follow

(Harrisburg) -- Two of the largest health systems in the midstate are fighting the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC is trying to block the merger between Penn State Hershey Medical Center and PinnacleHealth.

It's a case that could shape health care in the midstate for decades.

As part of our Transforming Health project, WITF's Ben Allen talks with Dr. Martin Makary of Johns Hopkins Medicine, an expert on health system mergers and their effects.

His first question: is the FTC right when it says the proposed merger in the midstate would boost prices?
