(York) -- Darrell Auterson, the CEO and president of the York County Economic Alliance, will step down as of Jan. 31, according to a press release the economic development group issued late Monday.

Auterson headed the York County Economic Alliance, and before that, one of its predecessor organizations, the York County Economic Development Corp. He oversaw the 2012 merger of the York County Economic Development Corp. and the York County Chamber of Commerce that created the York County Economic Alliance.

"It has been a great honor to serve this community and these organizations for over 14 years, but it is time for me to pursue new professional challenges," Auterson said in a press release. "I believe I have helped lead this organization as far as I can and now it is time to make way for new leadership to take the YCEA to the next level."

Auterson could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday evening.

During his tenure, Auterson helped recruit 27 new businesses to York County, creating more than $1.9 billion in investment, including consumer product company Church & Dwight, and retailer Target Corp., which developed an e-commerce fulfillment center in West Manchester Township. Target's project is slated to bring 250 jobs to the county over three years.

"On behalf of the entire York County Economic Alliance Board of Directors, we would like to express our gratitude for the past 14 years of service that Darrell has provided to the organization and our community," Doug Berman, the Economic Alliance's newly named board chair. Berman was announced on Jan. 5 as the Economic Alliance's board chair for 2016-2017.

The Economic Alliance's board will name an interim CEO while it conducts a national search for a permanent successor to Auterson.
