AG candidate says outside review of emails should be ended

(Harrisburg) -- A county district attorney running to become the state's top prosecutor says current Attorney General Kathleen Kane should cancel an outside review of her agency's emails.

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said at a Capitol news conference on Wednesday that the investigation by Washington lawyer Doug Gansler was a waste of money and not related to any allegations of criminal activity.

Morganelli says Gansler's firm should return to the attorney general's office the vast trove of the agency's email traffic being reviewed for salacious and offensive messages.

Morganelli and at least two others are seeking the Democratic nomination against Kane. He says whomever succeeds Kane should replace all the office's top-tier employees.

Gansler says he's not surprised the attorney general's decisions are under scrutiny during a political campaign.
